Electrostatic Discharges (ESD) FAQs
What Are Electrostatic Discharges and What Type of Damage Does it Cause?
Electrostatic discharges (ESD) are occurrences of static electricity. This can come from a variety of sources including wood surfaces, floors, cloths, chairs, packaging, and assembly areas. This electricity causes an electric shock. Although small discharges don’t damage the human body, these shocks can cause severe damage to electronic devices. The ESD can cause catastrophic damage and leave a device inoperable. ESDs can also cause minor latent damage that cause more issues in the lifespan of a device.
How Do “ESD Safe Materials” Minimize Damage?
Anti-static fire retardant plastic sheeting is essential for protecting both personnel and work areas from damage caused by electrostatic discharges. In the work area, anti-static plastic sheeting can be used to neutralize electrostatic charges when applied to things like tables, equipment, and room dividers.
Anti-static plastic sheeting can also be used to contain electronic devices during storage and transportation. This protection comes in the form of packagings such as protective bags, sheeting, and containers.

Anti-Static Fire Retardant Plastic Sheeting Certifications
American National Standards Institute
ANSI/ESD STM 11.11-2015 “was developed to fulfill a need to measure static dissipative planar materials not provided for by existing ASTM resistivity measurement methods. A static dissipative material, as defined by the ESD Association’s glossary of terms, may have volume or surface resistive characteristics, or both. This procedure is a resistance measurement on the surface of the material and is applied without regard to the sample’s mechanism of conduction.”
The National Fire Protection Association
NFPA 701 “establishes test methods to assess the propagation of flame of various textiles and films under specified fire test conditions.”
NFPA addresses “two distinct test methods differentiate fabrics of different densities. The test methods apply to textile materials used in interior furnishing for public occupancy buildings including curtains, window shades, draperies, table linens, textile wall hangings, as well as to fabrics used in the assembly of awnings, tents, tarps, and other similar architectural fabric structures and banners.”
UL Standard for Safety Tests for Flame-Propagation of Fabrics and Films
UL 214 are the “requirements apply to the performance in flame-exposure tests of flame-resistant fabrics of natural, synthetic, or combinations of natural and synthetic fibers; or films intended for such use as tents, awnings, draperies, or decorations. The flame resistance of the fabric or film may be inherent in the material used or may be the result of chemical treatment to retard ignition and spread of flame.”
American Society for Testing and Materials
Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials
ASTM E-84 is a test method used “to determine the relative burning behavior of the material by observing the flame spread along with the specimen. Flame spread and smoke-developed index are reported. However, there is not necessarily a relationship between these two measurements.”
